Following his graduation, Amos went back to New York City and began working in the mailroom before joining the William Morris Agency as its first African American talent agent. By sending his homemade chocolate cookies and an invitation to meet, Amos started to draw in new talent and customers. With a quarter of a million dollars from singers Helen Reddy and Marvin Gaye, Wally launched the first Famous Amos store in Los Angeles in 1975. 

That year, the company made $300,000 in cookie sales. Amos was appointed national spokesperson for Literacy Volunteers of America in 1979. However, due to financial difficulties, Wally sold both his company and the trademarked name “Famous Amos” in 1985. In 1987, he received the Horatio Alger Award. In 1988, the Shansby Group bought Famous Amos Cookies. By 1982, Famous Amos had generated $12 million in revenue. That’s equivalent to $30 million today.
